NEW Puccho Review!

Puccho, let's go.
Puccho. It’s one of the cornerstones of Tofu Cute’s snack offerings. We’ve always had Puccho - and in theory - we’ll always have puccho. We’ve recently added 3 unique types to our online shop, so to give us a break from the flurry of plush themed content we’ve had here on the blog lately, I thought it’d be best to deliver some reviews of the new flavours. I know, you probably want me to talk about the new Re-Ment or Mameshiba Slippers or something in the lead up to Halloween, but this is my blog, so we’re talking about Puccho for now.

If you somehow didn’t already know, Puccho is a soft, chewy candy from Japan. They come in a wide variety of flavours including seasonal varieties that are only around for a short time, alongside many classic flavours that are available pretty much all the time. Some iconic flavours of Puccho include Soda, Melon, Peach, Grape, Cola and the always mysterious ‘Miracle’ fruit mix flavours. Today, we’re looking at three brand NEW flavours - Strawberry Mochi, Energy AWAKE and Cream Soda.
Puccho - Strawberry Mochi Flavour
I was surprised to see another ‘bagged’ type of Puccho arrive on the front page of Tofu Cute. This type of Puccho is a bit less common than the standard small packs, but often arrive to demonstrate bold new flavour types for the Puccho brand. Around the same time last year, we had the halloween 'trick or treat’ edition of Puccho, which combined some of its classic fruit flavours with a ‘trick’ flavour. This year, we have a more traditional offering in the form of Strawberry Mochi.

The strawberry mochi flavour does a really good job at recreating the mochi flavour, with a slightly different but still impressive texture. Like most puccho, this type has the chewy, ‘yoghurt-y’ outer layer, but also contains real pieces of red bean in the strawberry flavoured centre. The sweetness of the strawberry and the more neutral taste of the red bean collide in an interesting combination, producing a really unique puccho experience unlike any other that has come before. Taste-wise it’s pretty close to the real thing, so if you like traditional Japanese flavour profiles, this one's for you. This is also a great one to share, because it comes in a bag filled with lots of individually wrapped candies - more than your average pack of puccho! Get it and try it with some friends!
Puccho - Energy Drink AWAKE
I have to admit, I laughed at this particular flavour name. The need to add a capitalised ‘AWAKE’ at the end of what was already a fairly descriptive title of an energy drink flavour is pretty funny. As a busy freelancer, I sometimes have to resort to the vice of caffeinated energy drinks to stay awake, so I was looking forward to what Puccho had in store with this flavour. As the packaging notifies, this contains real B-vitamins - which if you didn’t know, are the vitamins responsible for keeping you AWAKE and reducing fatigue. So this puccho also has some of the effects of an energy drink, too.

The flavour itself is very close to a popular brand of energy drink that you may well be familiar with. Like, shockingly close. It retains the signature Puccho chewiness, but with the crisp, tangy and somewhat fruity taste of energy drinks. It also has small ‘fizzy’ candy pieces and gummy pieces embedded within the main chewy candy piece, much like the Soda or Cola flavours of Puccho.

After eating an entire pack of Energy AWAKE Puccho, I was surprised at just how AWAKE I actually felt. Perhaps it was a placebo effect, or perhaps it was the effect of all the Vitamin C, B12 and B6 that it contains. Either way, these are a delicious treat, but be sure to consume them responsibly!
Puccho - Cream Soda (With Sumikko Gurashi figure!)
Adding on a free Sumikko Gurashi figure to a pack of Puccho is an incredibly easy way to get me to buy that Puccho. It feels like a bribe, which made me assume that this Cream Soda flavour would be worse than the usual high standard that Puccho puts out. Thankfully, I was very wrong - the cream soda flavour is a delight.

Cream Soda isn’t a very common flavour for Japanese candy, but I think this puccho flavour proves that it probably should be! With a slight ‘fizziness’ and a slight ‘creaminess’, this is a flavour of Puccho that would be easy to mistakenly (or intentionally) eat a lot of. It tastes a lot like the real thing and it isn’t as intense as a flavour like ‘Energy AWAKE’. This is a very ‘relaxed’ Puccho flavour, if that makes any sense at all.

But beyond just the puccho itself, you also get a cute Sumikko Gurashi mini figure to display! It features all the iconic Sumikko Gurashi characters that you’d expect. It’s a blind box situation, so whilst I was hoping to get the Polar Bear, I received the Penguin(?). It’s a very cute and soft figure, and it sits on my desk now. If you just want a good flavour of puccho, you can’t really go wrong with this one; you also get a free Sumikko Gurashi figure, so that’s pretty awesome!
That’s all for this review round-up of the latest Puccho flavours. My favourite of this new set was probably the Energy AWAKE, just because it felt so unique, but the other two are also winners! If you’re in the mood for a chewy candy, you can literally never go wrong with Puccho. I don’t think they’ve missed once. You can find all types of Puccho on our online store, as well as a wide range of other Japanese candy!
