Our Favourite Sanrio Collaborations!

Because we could always do with more Sanrio!
A recent update for Nintendo’s popular relaxed island life-simulator game Animal Crossing: New Horizons has re-introduced a feature which allows you to add some adorable Sanrio-themed animals to your island. As fans of Animal Crossing and Sanrio in equal measure, it’s a collaboration that we obviously love.

If you didn’t already know, we love Sanrio here at Tofu Cute. We’re pleased to stock official Sanrio products whenever we can, and we regularly partner with our friends at ARTBOX, the UK’s leading official Sanrio shop. Many members of Team Tofu are fanatics of at least one or more Sanrio mascot characters, with many having impressive Sanrio collections of their own! So we have a fair bit of knowledge when it comes to Sanrio, and the various collabs they’ve done in the past.

If you didn't know, Sanrio’s cute characters have a long history of popping up in all sorts of places, in a wide variety of fun crossovers that you might not have expected. It's our duty to inform you, so here’s some of Team Tofu’s personal favourites!
Hello Kitty x Godzilla
That’s right - on a few occasions, Hello Kitty has appeared alongside cinema’s most classic giant monster in the form of Hello x Kitty x Godzilla collaborations. For a limited time, Hello Kitty x Godzilla art prints were available to purchase at the Godzilla store in Tokyo, during the release of the previous animated Godzilla movie, 2017’s Godzilla: Planet of The Monsters. The artwork itself shows us a cute ‘sanrio-esque’ version of Godzilla, which certainly makes them seem a lot less imposing and a lot more cute. Aww.
Sanrio x Tamagotchi
Did you ever have a Tamagotchi? When it comes to virtual pets, it’s still the biggest name. If you’re somehow not aware of what a tamagotchi is (what rock were you living under during the 90's?) they’re digital pets which you take care of using a small portable egg-shaped device. Using the device, you’re challenged with raising a cute creature by ensuring they eat, sleep and have fun. They became something of a phenomenon, and were a lot of fun, provided you didn’t accidentally neglect your virtual pet (I’ve heard many tamagotchi horror stories).

Of course, Sanrio are all about cute characters, so the idea for a collaboration between the two must have seemed obvious. This first came about with the Tamagotchi M!x line of products, which featured a licensed Sanrio version that allowed your digital pet to interact with a variety of Sanrio characters in locations themed around the Sanrio Puroland theme park in Japan. Hello Kitty, My Melody and Gudetama all made appearances.

But that’s not all! Tamagotchi and Sanrio have continued to crossover regularly from this point on. Another notable example is the Gudetama tamagotchi (Gudetamagotchi?) which allowed you to raise Sanrio’s classic lazy egg character Gudetama from a baby egg to…a slightly bigger egg? It adds a lot of cheeky and charming Gudetama details to the usual Tamagotchi formula. For example, when they ‘die’ they’re merely taken away by chopsticks to be eaten, and because Gudetama is lazy, they’re a lot harder to provoke into any kind of activity. Our gude friends at ARTBOX stocked them for a while, but they were only around for a short time!
Hello Kitty x Eva Air
It takes a certain level of global recognition to be able to sponsor an airline, but Hello Kitty’s got that covered. Back in the pre-pandemic world when we could still safely board planes for a casual bit of international travel, Hello Kitty made their way onto a number of themed planes in a collaboration with Eva Air.

With a selection of specially themed flights throughout Asia, Eva Airways brought Hello Kitty (and a variety of other Sanrio characters) to the skies. Each flight came with themed headrests and pillows, Sanrio themed meals, entertainment and of course, an incredible range of exclusive merchandise.
Hello Kitty x Evangelion
Hello Kitty has also been involved with a whole different kind of ‘Eva’, namely, the popular animated mind-bending mecha show Neon Genesis Evangelion. Given the mature themes of the show, it’s not the sort of thing that necessarily makes sense as a crossover, but that’s the wild world of brand collaborations for you!

This one was particularly tough to find information about, as this collaboration seemed to have happened quite a while ago, and in several different forms. A majority of this collaboration consisted of exclusive merchandise available at the Evangelion store in Tokyo, some of which have now reached a considerably higher value due to their rarity. The collaboration products mostly involved Evangelion characters, including the titular biomechanical giants the evangelions themselves, rendered in a Hello Kitty style! As a huge fan of Evangelion myself, this crossover appeals a lot to me, and I hope I can get my hands on some of the cool plush that was released in the series some day!
Sanrio x Monchhichi
If you’ve seen the monchichi collection video on our YouTube channel, you might already be familiar with Monchichi, the cute monkey vintage plush brand. If you’re not as familiar, you may not know that Monchhichi has been going since 1971, and so has naturally crossed over with a lot of other cute characters to produce some truly awesome results.

One such collaboration is a crossover with none other than Sanrio, featuring 5 unique plush based on Hello Kitty, Keroppi, PomPom Purin, My Melody and Cinammoroll, with each of the Mochhichi please wearing onesie outfits based on the iconic characters. My personal favourite is actually the Keroppi one - I think the green suits them very well.
Gudetama x ARTBOX Cafe
Of course, one collab that’s particularly close to our hearts is Sanrio’s collab with the ARTBOX Cafe for the ‘Gudetama Lazy Lounge’, which was available at the ARTBOX Cafe in the UK. This is one Sanrio collab that I’ve been lucky enough to experience, and let me tell you - it was just as amazing as it looks. Boasting a wide variety of themed foods and an amazing interior design, it was a match made in heaven, giving Gudetama the spotlight they deserve. ARTBOX Cafe recently changed its theme to the 'LINE FRIENDS & BT21 Tasty Universe' and it’ll be reopening soon, so get involved if you’re looking for a quality character cafe experience!
Of course, there's many more Sanrio crossovers to talk about here. As a company with a rich history, they've had plenty of cool crossovers - far too many to mention them all here! The cute characters lend themselves well to appearing in things with a similar aesthetic, and we always love to see it.

What's your favourite Sanrio crossover or collaboration? Be sure to let us know on social media, or tell us where you'd love to see Sanrio characters pop up in the future. Maybe together we can will the Tofu Cute x Sanrio crossover into existence.
