Lots of us love matcha. I think it's fair to say that it's a staple flavour of Japanese snacks. Whilst it goes under-appreciated by some, it definitely has a strong following of supporters by both Tofu Cute fans and Japanese culture enthusiasts as whole.
But what exactly is matcha, and why does it make such a delicious flavour? The simplest explanation is that it's a powder made from ground green tea leaves which within Japan is used in the ceremonial processes of tea making and consumption. The process of grinding the tea leaves into a powder makes it easier to incorporate as a flavour in other dishes, leading to its use in a variety of drinks, traditional desserts and eventually, candy.

On today's edition of the Tofu Cute Blog, we're going to be looking at some of the matcha snacks that I personally recommend from our current selection. |

If you're looking for a snack from our range that's filling and delicious, look no further than my fifth favourite Matcha snack - the Matcha Cream Bran Brownie! This excellent snack is a recent addition to our online shop, and since they've arrived at the Tofu Cute offices, I've found myself eating them a lot.
As their name might suggest, these snacks are made like a traditional 'brownie' dessert, with two cake style slices that surround some delicious matcha cream. The entire thing is an interesting matcha-green colour, but it's a lot more tasty than it looks!
The three elements come together in a wonderful harmony, and you get two in one pack, which is pretty cool. As my only criticism, it's somewhat drier that what I would like, so I recommend washing it down with a tasty beverage like Ramune, or Pokka Milk Coffee. |

In terms of biscuit-based matcha snacks, Hello Panda is one of the finest that we have to offer. Although Hello Panda comes in other flavours such as chocolate, double chocolate, milk and coconut, I definitely think the matcha flavour of the snack is the one which works the best.
If you've for some reason never tried Hello Panda, I highly recommend the matcha flavour. Each pack contains a large amount of crunchy biscuit shells filled with a smooth matcha cream filling, with adorable panda illustrations printed on the biscuit themselves, making for a snack that is as cute as it is delicious. Because it's such great value, I get Hello Panda often for a simple but nice snack. |

But the joy of biscuit matcha snacks that are also panda themed doesn't end with Hello Panda, surprisingly. Saku Saku Pan is an entirely different experience, with a thick biscuit layer coated in an equally thick layer of matcha flavoured (and green coloured) milk chocolate.
The result is a biscuit that is both crunchier and more chocolate-y than Hello Panda, but this doesn't lessen the matcha taste in any way - in fact, you could suggest that it enhances it. There's something about the combination of the crunchy & smooth textures of the biscuit and chocolate that just really works.
They also come in a easy-to-reseal shiny pouch adorned with their iconic Panda character, with each cookie shaped like a panda face with a different expression. I'm personally a fan of the shocked looking Panda face. |

Considering how much I like Saku Saku Pan Matcha, it's an impressive feat for the standard Matcha Kit Kat to come above it on this list. I suppose that's an indication of how good the original matcha kit kat formula is! For all of the many Japanese Kit Kat flavours that we've seen and tasted since, Matcha Kit Kats have stood the test of time (this is consistent with its placing on my ranking of all the kit kat flavours that we had at the time that post was written).
There's not much to say about the Matcha Kit Kat that hasn't already been said, but as an introduction into the world of Japanese snacks, as a nice gift, or even as a way to treat yourself when getting a huge haul, the original matcha Kit Kat can't be beaten. The best way to get your hands on them is to get one of these Uji-Matcha gift boxes, which contains 3 separate kit kats, which are as you would expect is perfect for giving as a gift, or for eating all three kit kats to yourself.

One motivation for making this matcha-themed blog would be the recent introduction of Seasonal HORN, a legendary new snack with a lot to bring to the world of matcha treats.
Yes, the name may be a bit silly, but if you want the ultimate matcha story, you've got every reason to get the HORN. Words almost fail me in explaining why it's so good - but it's very moreish, very delicate but packed full of matcha flavour.
This combines a crispy wafer shell with a delicious matcha cream filling, with classic milk chocolate complimenting each end of the treats, which are individually wrapped within a glossy presentation box. Seasonal Horn really gives you a premium matcha snack experience, and you owe it to yourself to try it. |
