Let's learn more about our favourite plumber!
In the early 1980’s
Shigeru Miyamoto created a character; moustachioed plumber with a red hat that is synonymous with video games and beloved around the world; Mario, of the Super Mario franchise!

First appearing under the name Jumpman in the arcade classic Donkey Kong, he finds himself battling up and down platforms to save his girlfriend Pauline from the clutches of Donkey Kong. After the success of the game and its sequels, Nintendo decided to rebrand Jumpman and put him in the spotlight, and so the Mario we know today was born!

Mario’s first game Mario Bro’s released in arcades in 1983, where players helped Mario and his brother Luigi battle through 4 stages of New York sewers, fighting enemies such as Shellcreepers, which became the base design for the Koopa Troopa’s in later games!
It would be Mario’s next adventure
that would change video game history and make him a household hero from lands far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom.

Nintendo released Super Mario Bros in 1985 on their home console the Famicom (known as the Nintendo Entertainment System in the west). In the game, Mario traverses the Mushroom Kingdom through and overworld, underworld, waters and castles to rescue Princess Peach from the Koopa turtle tribe and even the dastardly King Koopa himself.

The game was a hit around the world and to date it has sold over 58 million copies worldwide, remaining revered as one of the greatest platform games of all time! The Mario franchise has spawned many successful game series including Paper Mario, Mario Kart and Mario Party. Mario’s trajectory from background character to superstar plumber is one of the biggest successes in gaming history.
The man behind the moustache

Mario lives in Mushroom Kingdom with his brother Luigi, repeatedly saving Princess Peach from villains such as Bowser and King Koopa (although Mario has found himself being rescued by Peach in the Super Princess Peach game!).

Sporting a dashing moustache and known for his signature blue overalls, red shirt and hat with its trademark 'M' logo, there's very little known about his actual plumbing abilities. He's been known to work in other fields, even becoming a doctor in Dr. Mario! He has a love for food (especially pasta) and on occasions has been known to adventure all the way across the Mushroom Kingdoms on the promise of some cake.

Although there's only a few details in the games about Mario’s life, it’s his bravery, determination to battles against all odds, and selflessness to help those in need that has made him a beloved character and role model for all ages over the years.
